Vince Zampella, renowned for co-creating the immensely successful first-person shooter Call of Duty, has passed away in a traffic collision in the state of California at the age of 55.

The tragic news was announced by Electronic Arts, which owns Respawn Entertainment, the development studio that he helped create.

The renowned industry figure passed away following his vehicle was involved in a crash and burst into flames on a motorway in the Los Angeles area on Sunday, US media outlets report.

"We are facing a heartbreaking loss, and our deepest sympathies go to his family and friends, those closest to him, and everyone impacted by his creative vision," a spokesperson for Electronic Arts commented.
