Micky van de Ven scored twice as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman struck on two occasions from corners in the first half to place their strong form at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of fine saves to guarantee the London club went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, instructing the match official to check the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official ruled that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's team into third place in the Premier League, a handful of points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

Everton remain in 14th position and are half a dozen points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in role at both ends of pitch

After a drab weekday display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a mere two shots on target, Frank chose the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an free the defender to head home.

And the captain - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - notched his second in added time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defence, partnering well with Kevin Danso as the pair handled excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton missing striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have faded slightly and fans flocked to the gates after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two established strikers - had scored just a single goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to add to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having space and time to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, as well, was unable to make an impact after replacing Beto in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of chance. Most of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered threatening balls into the Spurs box.
