Tragic News on UPS Incident: Death Toll Climbs to 13
The tally of fatalities from the transport jet which burst into flames and plummeted has now risen to 13, per latest reports.
City Leader's Statement
While en route to the Union’s candlelight gathering, I received word of a thirteenth victim that died as a result of the UPS flight 2976 incident,” wrote the city mayor in a online message. “My prayers is with the loved ones, associates and peers of all who were killed in this recent calamity. We will overcome this as one.”
Victims Identified
An announcement from the carrier listed the flight crew operating the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 as Captain Richard Wartenberg, Co-pilot Lee Truitt, and Relief Captain Dana Diamond.
“Our hearts are extended to every staff member who has been impacted and all in our local area – supporting you and ensuring you obtain the attention and resources you need is our main concern,” the organization’s message stated.
Probe Details
Government authorities revealed that the UPS cargo plane’s left wing ignited and an engine detached soon after liftoff from the Louisville Muhammad Ali international airport, resulting in the aircraft to fall and explode into a inferno.
The NTSB has said it is investigating the jet’s service record, that was in the state for fixes weeks before the accident.
Flight tracking records showed the plane was on the tarmac in San Antonio, Texas from early September to 18 October.
“We are cognizant that this aircraft was there in the facility,” stated an NTSB member on the following day, without a precise date range. “We will look at every piece of service that was performed, even the Texas period, right up to the day of the flight.”
Retrieval of Critical Components
The cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder were retrieved, and the engine was located on the tarmac.
The units – referred to as flight recorders – were designed to survive accident forces and severe heat from blazes, and they looked to be undamaged when found among the wreckage. Authorities plan on analyzing recordings from the recorders.
The plane’s final recorded information displayed an altitude of 475 ft and a velocity of 210 miles per hour before the accident.
Service Record
Based on Federal Aviation Administration documents dated that date, a crack on a structural piece in the center wing fuel tank needed fixes.
Singapore-based ST Engineering, which stated it provides structural repairs for UPS’s MD-11 and runs a service location in that city, declined to speak, but stated it would work closely when investigators approached it.
Activities Resume
In the meantime, the hub activities continued last night with its Next Day Air also known as night sort procedure, official Jim Mayer said. All three runways at the airport were also reopened.
The sorting center in the city is the company’s most significant. The hub hires more than twenty thousand individuals in the locality, processes 300 flights each day and processes more than a huge volume of parcels an hour.
Local Support
A gathering was organized on the night of 6 November by the local labor union, which acts for employees at the Louisville airport, the company’s largest shipping facility.
Teamsters Local 89, which represents UPS workers, began the memorial with a period of reflection at 5.14pm, the approximate hour of the incident before.
“This tragedy was so unexpected, so unforeseen,” the mayor told the assembly of 200. “No one had a chance to bid farewell to each of those who we have mourned.”
