The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The ex-president was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in September and given more than 27 years in incarceration, but he was staying under confinement pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official the presiding justice said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" came to light.

This involved trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a demonstration that could enable a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the detention, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the protest called by his child.

His son, his son Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

Bolsonaro is being held in a national police facility in Brasilia and will undergo a detention review on Sunday.

Recent Judicial Appeals

They also asked that Bolsonaro be authorized to depart his residence for medical care, saying he required ongoing care for lung conditions and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was determined responsible of orchestrating a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
