A state licensing board has endorsed a trio of planned gambling developments—a pair located in Queens and one in the borough of the Bronx. The board concluded the developments could create numerous new jobs and generate billions of public funds during the next years.
The official oversight agency is likely to follow the board's advice, potentially allow the venues to launch in the coming half-decade.
A Fierce Debate: Job Creator against Predatory Practice?
Yet, the move is far from without controversy. Critics, comprising some city dwellers and gambling researchers, maintain that urban casinos often fail to provide the touted gains.
"Proponents say it will create massive revenue, but it does not create net economic growth," noted an emeritus professor that has researched the industry. "It is merely shifting money in the economy. Especially in a city, it's not attracting tourists; it is merely taking money from local residents."
Concerns are amplified amid a national betting boom initiated in the wake of a landmark 2018 Supreme Court ruling that paved the way for broad sports betting. Since then, commercial gaming has recorded about 19 straight quarters of revenue increases.
The Hidden Cost: Addictive Behavior
Alongside this economic growth, research suggest a significant increase—around twenty-three percent—in online searches for support for addiction.
Community testimony underscore this personal impact. "My husband along with my three sons each struggled with addiction. This addiction has devastated my family, as well as many families like mine," said one community member at a recent gathering.
Community Pushback and Projected Benefits
This has not been the first example of pushback. Past attempts to locate casinos in Manhattan faced vocal criticism by theater groups who argued cultural institutions like theaters deliver more reliable economic growth.
In spite of the concerns, the board gave its approval, relying on economic projections which estimated considerable public income plus public amenities like green areas and transit upgrades.

The Ephemeral Nature of Casino Jobs
