Space Traveler Shares Depression In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Backlash Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also carried celebrity crewmates.

The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, recalling a phone call from a mission companion in the days following the journey.

She described the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Buried Under Misogyny

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and performed experiments during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her studies and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was drowned out under the avalanche of misogyny.

She is widely recognized for her pioneering work fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was paused after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

The Fog Begins to Lift

In the time since fulfilling her dream, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the supporters whose support were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she said.

She noted that amid the criticism, important benefits had emerged from the mission, including increased focus on her women's health research and platforms for her activism.

Flight Details

The fully automated spacecraft launched from Texas in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that crossed the edge of outer space.

The group of women also included experts in multiple disciplines.
