The Evolution of a Movement can be marked by clear stages.

1. The Core Concept

A dominant personality or leaders present a revolutionary approach that promises a panacea for disconnected individuals.

Thus we find ourselves. Plans are in motion to storm the compound overseas. The gunships are circling. Smoke is rising from within. A lone figure, exposed, anxious, the slogan POSITIVE INTENT written on his body as a symbol, has come staggering into view and is taken aside with discretion to a different team elsewhere.

Do you recall the early days, when the world was still young? The initial phase, of pure instinct.

2. The Honeymoon Phase

Cult leaders offer a reboot, optimism ahead, support, redemption together united in belief in the philosophy.

What was this thing at first? Players celebrating basking in glory. Tattoos. Forearms. Determination. Confident masculinity. Admittedly, The squad will claim it’s not a real term, ironically because if it doesn’t exist, what exactly did I just watch?

But we know its essence. It’s Harry Brook attempting a move so depraved it’s beyond belief. It’s the adrenaline of the captain at his peak, a demeanor suggesting: pensive Nordic god, strong features, untamed style, so authentically Modern Savage you almost imagine to glance over and notice he’s fielding in the field stripped to the waist and cradling a wild salmon.

It’s Ben Duckett continuing to have permission to talk in press conferences, out there looking like a joyful figure formally attired, expressing thoughts like we’re breaking down traditions. Indeed, the energy, initially, was only good energy.

3. A New Life

Growth phase. Cohesion maintained via memorization of mantras. These beliefs can appear contradictory to prove commitment.

Is it just me? The reaction, the fury, the disappointment after the first Ashes Test defeat appears excessive, unwarranted. England batted badly in Perth, as they often do in Australia. They were savaged in the field for a couple of hours as the bowling and captaincy fell apart, carved around by the batsman playing aggressively but smarter, responsive to the situation, a man playing with brilliance.

Now there is the attacks, the frustration, the view of the sport as a kind of abomination. The consensus is that defeat must be total, they should be dismantled, to be scoured, destroyed, defeated through sheer skill of the bowler’s action, the conventional tactics of the bowler, seen enjoying his wickets modestly as if receiving a rewarding prize. What will this do to them?

4. Hate Bonding

Issues emerge from failures in the plan. But the cult cannot admit errors. It starts to feed on hatred of the outside world.

In truth, approaching the upcoming game, we are at a critical juncture in the lifespan of this movement. England could quite easily win in the next Test through aggressive play. Probably, they could lose just as quickly. In case of defeat it appears we really might be entering the decline.

Ahead of this, a couple of points to note about this. More than two years ago, back in those heady early days, of optimism and energy, I wrote an article labeling it a movement. There was outrage, which proved the point since it’s clear the best way of proving something definitely isn’t a cult is should followers send hundreds of furiously one-eyed messages objecting to the questioning of its truths.

What has happened recently are equally notable. Criticism of the approach is now the trend. We have a uniformly angry internet, disappointed commentators, shots of angry middle-aged followers overseas cheated out of three days of cricket, like a room full of people wanting fairness.

On the other hand, exists the larger scene of the opponent’s mixed ingrained annoyance towards the unconventional visitors, stating, your cherished traditions and have honed to distinguish yourselves culturally from us, it’s not serious in the end old boy.

Here lies the truth. All movements are similar. Bazball was a cult as the game has its own culture. Or rather, the sport in England is closed, a clique, an elite gathering, an insular community with centuries of tradition and mystery supporting it. This has always been a place where power and access are hoarded. It’s the imperial sport of the British, the early image-makers. And surprisingly, the country is a phenomenon, a structure of hidden ranks, a place that literally still has a king.

The team have been sealed up within this world from a young age. In trying to escape from it, to create a less brutal environment, they are just repeating their own experience, building another enclosure, a limited community, but doing it this time with a modern squad and a leader promoting authenticity if you fit the mold.

Focus on the moment. Confront risks. But no matter how fast and far you run, you remain stuck.

Considering this, now is the time to offer compassion for the movement, to appreciate its good points, that are numerous. How to define it? Encouraging expression. Defying norms. Batting aggressively|Attacking with
