Senegal's Rising Talent Camara: Starting from Dreams to Afcon Favourites.
When I enter the space, the young midfielder grabs a football he clings to throughout our chat. It’s a powerful visual metaphor for a ambition he has always held onto. “I only wanted football; I was focused solely on that,” remarks this Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His determination and raw talent convinced teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the most difficult approval to secure was not a sporting director or coach, it was from his dad. “He was against me playing soccer simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.
Overcoming Early Hurdles
Eventually, on “a special day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to pursue his path in the sport. A further barrier was his modest frame, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a contract.
Nevertheless, the famed academy – the institution that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following he earned the MVP in a regional tournament, the scouts were “shocked” to discover he was without a contract. They moved fast. “They took me straight to the training centre. They prevented me from returning to Casamance,” he recalled.
An Unforgettable Season and Continental Breakthrough
This move set him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough was 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with Camara winning the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his nation to victory and being named player of the tournament.
Soon after, he was unveiled as Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” states the youngster. He resides by himself in Europe, a situation his relatives encourage to maintain his concentration.
Inspiration and On-Field Identity
Off-field noise are not really a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “humility” and exceptional skills. He is also a big admirer of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His powerful shot and accuracy from dead-ball situations are key strengths. Camara confesses a need to control his aggression, after being sent off early in his tenures at each French club. “It's a trait that is following me!” he quips.
Monaco, Mentors and Upcoming Ambitions
At Monaco, he values the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” he said.
Currently, his focus is squarely on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England on their soil…,” he states, pointing to a historic 3-1 victory in Nottingham.
On a potential transfer to the English top flight, he remains committed to Monaco for now. “I am very at ease here,” he insists. He is frequently ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about targeting the main Africa Player of the Year in the future.
“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. If you beat England in their own country… it gives you belief.”
Looking ahead, Lamine Camara combines humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and big dreams targeting to guide Senegal to Afcon success and forge his own lasting legacy in the game.
