Larian Studios Clarifies Its Application of AI Tools for Upcoming Divinity
The team behind acclaimed titles like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin just shown its upcoming project, creating immense excitement within the player base. However, recent statements from the studio's lead designer have introduced nuance to the discussion, focusing on the developer's stance toward machine learning.
A Tool for Ideation, Not Replacement
In a new clarification, Swen Vincke outlined that the company is using generative AI for particular ancillary functions. These involve fleshing out PowerPoint slides, generating rough visual ideas, and writing placeholder dialogue.
Crucially, Vincke stressed that the shipping assets in the game will be authored entirely by human creatives. "We are developing all the content manually," he stated.
We are constantly expanding our roster of writers and are actively putting together writing teams.
Since visual development is being particularly mentioned — we currently have twenty-three visual developers and have positions available for additional talent.
All our efforts we do is incremental and aimed at enabling creatives to spend additional energy on making content.
Every machine learning application used well is a boost to a developer's process, never a stand-in for their talent.
Addressing Concerns and Clarifying the Vision
The revelation of employing this technology initially sparked concern among portions of the fanbase. In reply, Vincke issued further clarification on online platforms.
"Our team utilizes AI tools to gather inspiration, in the same way we use the internet and physical media," he stated. "During the initial brainstorming phase we use it as a rough outline for structure which we then swap out with original concept art."
He noted, "Larian brings on artists for their inherent skill, not for their ability to replicate what a algorithm proposes."
Key Areas of AI Integration
Vincke had previously detailed the company's targeted strategy to AI and ML, defining its use into three main functions:
- Automation of Tedious Tasks: This encompasses motion capture cleaning, audio processing, and pipeline-specific tasks like adapting animations for different models.
- Rapid Prototyping ('White Boxing'): Using tools to quickly build simple models of mechanics to experiment with concepts prior to expensive development.
- Experimental Frontiers: Exploring how AI could in the future create emergent player agency, particularly in simulating player-driven narratives in a complex RPG.
He explicitly stated that key artistic domains — including music composition — are are in no way fields where the company is reducing human involvement. Conversely, Larian is actively hiring in these precise roles.
"Our studio is not launching a game with machine-made assets, and we are certainly not planning on reducing teams to replace them with artificial intelligence," Vincke summarized.
