Jurgen Klopp admits a return to lead Liverpool is plausible in theory.
Jurgen Klopp, who stepped down from Liverpool in 2024, indicated that a future comeback is a possibility. The 58-year-old, after a transformative nine-season tenure which brought a European Cup triumph and ending the club's long wait in 30 years, now holds roles overseeing worldwide football within the Red Bull organization and as an advisor to Germany's league body.
Supporters’ Hopes and His Frank Comments
Liverpool won the Premier League under Arne Slot, though countless followers who adore the manager would embrace the possibility of his potential comeback. Speaking candidly, he told the podcast host: “I declared I will never coach another team within the country. Therefore if then it’s Liverpool...yes. It's plausible.”
“Being 58, so I could make the decision down the line, who knows. Do I have to make the decision today? Then I will not coach again. Fortunately, no such pressure exists. I'll wait and observe what lies ahead.”
Conditions for a Comeback
Questioned regarding which situations must arise to bring him back to management, Klopp admitted he feels no immediate pull for a comeback. “I'm not entirely sure, I enjoy my current role,” he said. “No longing for management; No desire to be in the rain for two-and-a-half or three hours; No need for press conferences multiple times weekly or having 10-12 interviews weekly.
“I don’t miss the dressing room in that context, however, dining out with the team having a nice chat, I appreciate that. Success was frequent meaning regularly great spirits around the place. I still have Virgil [Van Dijk’s] laugh in my ear for example.”
Praise for His Successor
He spoke highly of the current boss, praising him due to the changes that took the title in the previous season. Liverpool have lost a string of losses in all competitions after a summer spending spree, yet he dismissed the idea that it might signal a slump.
“[Liverpool have] a top-class attacker such as Wirtz, critics will regret with negative comments. An outstanding player. [Hugo] Ekitike, excellent performer. This is a well-built thoughtfully assembled roster. No need for concern about Liverpool, they will be fine.”
Heartfelt Words for Diogo Jota
He shared movingly about the death of the Portuguese star, a player he signed while in charge, along with the consequences for the team. The Portugal international was killed in a road accident alongside his brother recently.
“How do you replace somebody like Diogo? It goes beyond his on-field talent, it’s the guy he was. It's hard to picture the team environment without him in it. I still cannot speak properly on this topic. A devastating blow for his teammates too. No one within the club might employ it to justify results yet it's the reality. Entering the changing area which he filled completely. Coping with it on a personal level is challenging. Unbearable.”
