Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.
“What reassures me, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and he’s talking that way.”
NYPD issued security footage Monday of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries were reported.
The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday in the area between the famous arena and the iconic square. Boyd, 29, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn said Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a child.
“The first thing I thought about, he just had a kid,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There is a procedure involved, I’ll keep private, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that required surgery.
He signed with New York as a new signing in spring and was anticipated to become a key part of an improved special teams group under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad throughout the season while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, from Texas, began his career with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of UT in the 2019 draft. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
