Israelis commemorate two-year anniversary of 7 October incident as Gaza peace negotiations advance
Citizens have assembled across the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-initiated assault on 7 October 2023, as talks proceeded in Egypt over an end to the hostilities in Gaza.
The attack saw more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken away to Gaza as captives. It was the single most fatal day for Jews since the Second World War.
Israel reacted by initiating a armed campaign in Gaza which has killed in excess of 67,000 people, according to the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as reliable by the UN and other world agencies.
"Our bloodthirsty opponents have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on that day.
He also pledged to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the release of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the guarantee that Gaza will not present a danger to Israel".
Memorial Gatherings Across Israel
The government authorities rescheduled state commemorations until 16 October - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still were held around the country on Tuesday.
A memorial ceremony for the relatives of Israelis who died in the Hamas attack was conducted in the coastal city. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was aired across Israeli TV networks.
Some time earlier, a silent tribute was held across the country.
Ceasefire Discussions in Egypt
At the same time, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams convened in the North African tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a second day of mediated discussions to discuss the provisions of the proposal.
A prominent representative knowledgeable about the negotiations said that an late session of negotiations began at 7 PM local time.
The official stated the earlier meeting ended without tangible results, because of disagreements over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not resume combat after the opening period of the deal.
He added that the talks are "challenging and have not yet produce any significant progress," but noted that mediators are striving to reduce the disparities between the conflicting groups.
Essential Points in Talks
- An enduring ceasefire
- The exchange of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The withdrawal of military personnel from Gaza
- Arrangements for humanitarian aid deliveries
- Post-war governance of the region
Civilian Sentiment
In the city's public square earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose brother endured the incident on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were lost their lives and numerous more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - told: "Nowhere appears as home any longer and until each abducted person are released none of us will feel safe."
"When we see everyone home once more, we can breathe anew. Then we can start to recover," she continued.
In front of the leader's residence in Jerusalem, people congregated to show their solidarity for the loved ones of the hostages. Israel reports nearly fifty stay in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are considered to be surviving.
Demonstrator one woman explained: "We must do any agreement needed for the captives to be released. But we really want promises that we will be protected."
Research now regularly indicate that approximately seventy percent of Israelis want the hostilities to finish in exchange for the freedom of the hostages.
Gaza Conditions
At the site of Nova festival, mourners assembled to remember the victims.
From that location, the boom of Israeli air strikes and explosions could be heard just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the severe Israeli shelling carried on.
In the main city, air and artillery strikes were reported in the early hours of Tuesday in the western neighborhood, area and Nasr districts and in the eastern area of that sector, as well the camp to the north-west.
"Once the night falls, the fear appears with it," relocated Gaza City resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli aerial attack previously, shared.
"My family are afraid of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are lying together, embracing, notably my youngest child who rests his face on me the entire evening."
"Continuously we look at the updates to see developments. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be achieved and that the war will return to us."
Humanitarian Emergency
The medical facility in the urban area said it had accepted the remains of several people by the afternoon, including several who died in an Israeli strike in the southern area.
A different healthcare center in the south region of Khan Younis reported additional victims had been delivered. A person was lost his life by Israeli troops while looking for help to the south, medics said.
