The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
